Mobi Loop

This building knows no sleep; it is a relentless, unceasing vigil that condemns us to wakefulness as well. To stand within it is impossible, for standing is an acceptance of “being in the present,” and this space drives us into an eternal suspension between the past and the future. There is no news of catastrophe or redemption. On this Möbius strip, “up” and “down” are merely false compasses for movement.

In the center, however, is the courtyard.

An open void, dark, deep, and staring back at us. The heart yearns to collapse into this nothingness, to be liberated from the heavy burden of the constant duty of “becoming” and the endless anxiety of choice. Falling into this void is the sweet temptation of surrender; yielding to gravity so that physics, perhaps, might save us from the heavy load of freedom.

But the building does not let go.

This geometry, this merciless strip that has dissolved the boundary between inside and out, lifts you from the edge of the void and returns you to its own vicious circle; toward a sky that, seen behind parallel bars, is fragmented and ruined. It is as if even the sublime is imprisoned in this space, and truth, in the form of intermittent flashes of light, merely traces lines across our faces before vanishing. Tomorrow will be the same. Repetition is the first law of our condemned existence.

But the cypress…

The cypress stands alone, silent, at the heart of this emptiness. It does not hasten to reach some illusory destination, nor does it suffer or complain at the recurring return of the seasons. The cypress is radically free from the “Möbius logic.” Why? Because it has not submitted to the “logic of fruit.” It carries no preconceived “essence”; it bears no load of fruit to bind it to the chains of utility. It is not a tool in the hands of the world. All of its meaning lies in this very “weightlessness” and the mere act of “standing.”

Has it understood the secret of the building sooner, or has the building coiled itself around the secret of the tree?
